History Of Metal Casting

Metal mold casting has been around for a long time. Metal casting is arguably one of the earliest industrial processes in history.  Throughout previous decades, metal casting has been utilized to make tools, weapons, sculptures, transportation, and various other objects. Simply put, the metal mold casting process has been around for thousands of years and has evolved to become one of the more intricate foundry innovations.

What Is Metal Casting Used For?

The automobile, railroad, and heavy equipment industries make up a majority of castings produced worldwide. Because modern-day metal mold castings are mainly achieved through a unique computerized design process, attention to detail and precision leads to high-quality metal production. This efficient process services a diverse set of markets including agriculture, military, and other engine components.

Along with the industries mentioned above and along with other heavy machinery operations, metal mold castings can be used for the following objects:

  • electrical components
  • farming equipment
  • machining tools
  • household appliances
  • construction equipment
  • defense weapons

Permanent Castings

Metal castings produce a permanent mold product. This process produces metal with better dimensional tolerance and a higher and more uniformed property. Furthermore, there are several advantages of permanent mold castings such as the strength and the finish. For instance, “mold castings typically increase mechanical properties by 15% due to the reduced grain structure created by the freeze rate of steel versus sand.” In addition, the iron mold creates a much smoother finish than its sand counterpart.
